Last Thursday, the Central Catskills Collaborative re-christened the stretch of Route 28 that runs between Hurley and Andes as the "Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway."
The re-naming is part of the lengthy process of getting the road special recognition as a "scenic byway," a goal the group has been working towards for months. There were a bunch of other names in the running, the Daily Freeman reports:
Heart of the Catskills Corridor, Catskill Park Scenic Byway, Ulster-Delaware Turnpike Scenic Byway, Route 28 Scenic Catskills Byway, Gateway to the Catskills and Catskill Scenic Historic Byway.
But once something that combined "Catskill" and "mountain" was floated, it carried the day:
But then this brainstorming session yielded something different. It was noted that a name containing the term “Catskill Mountains” had never been in the running. Quickly, the name “Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway” was offered, and after a quick vote, the proposed new name for the stretch of Route 28 was chosen.
