Sneak peek at CUBA: My Revolution

Comix publisher Vertigo reveals a few pages of their upcoming September title, a graphic novel inspired by the incredible true experiences of local painter Inverna Lockpez, and brought to vivid life by comic artist Dean Haspiel. The gist:

From the moment Fidel Castro captures Havana in 1959, 17 year old Sonya believes in the promise of the Cuban Revolution. A medical student with aspirations of becoming a painter, she joins the militia and finds herself caught between idealism and ideology.

Inverna and Dean are both good friends of the Watershed Post. (Full disclosure: My co-editor and I were a hilariously exaggerated plot point in the first season of Bored to Death, the HBO series Haspiel keeps stocked with both artistic and dramatic fodder.) Still, I'm betting CUBA will hold plenty of surprises, even for those who know Inverna and her work.

The million-dollar question: Is there a starlet in Hollywood with the cojones to play Inverna -- er, Sonya -- on the big screen? Because that's where this bold tale is surely headed.
