Thought you could leave your car unlocked in the country? Think again

A rash of weekend robberies in the town of Ulster has Ulster County Sherrif Paul van Blarcum warning residents to lock their car doors, the Daily Freeman reports.

It's pretty common for people in rural areas like ours to leave their cars and houses unlocked. (We've even seen keys left in the ignition in the parking lot of the local supermarket.) Dear Abby tackled the issue in a column a couple of weeks ago, when she told a worried advice-seeker in no uncertain terms that her mother was nuts for leaving her door unlocked:

Your mother appears to be incredibly naive and in a state of complete denial. The first rule of personal safety is to remember that criminals seek easy targets — so the more difficult it is for them to make you a victim, the lower your risk for becoming one.
