Man crushed by car in Saugerties driveway

In the second Saugerties fatality this week, 56-year-old Edward M. Hayes was found dead in his driveway, pinned underneath his own car. According to a press release from the State Police, Hayes was found yesterday afternoon:

The New York State Police – Kingston and the Village of Saugerties Police Department are investigating the accidental death of Edward M. Hayes - 56 year of age of Saugerties. Hayes was found deceased this afternoon in the driveway of his residence. It appeared he was working on his automobile at the time of his death. Hayes was trapped beneath his vehicle and removed by members of the Police and Fire Departments. The Ulster County Medical Examiner’s Office was called and the investigation into the cause of his death is still pending. The State Police and Village of Saugerties Police Department were assisted at the scene by the Saugerties Fire Department.

The AP and the Times Herald-Record are reporting that Hayes was working on the car when the single jack holding it up gave out. From the AP, via WCAX:

Investigator Mario Restivo says Hayes had supported the Dodge Neon with only a single jack and no safety devices when it fell on him in the driveway of his home Monday afternoon. He said Hayes was pinned and unable to breathe.
