Man arrested after nursing home fight

A fight between two residents at an assisted-living home in Esopus got so violent that one man was airlifted to Albany by helicopter, and another is facing felony assault charges, police say. A press release issued last night by the Ulster County Sheriff's Office:

Deputies from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office report the arrest of Sherman L. Lawson, 55, of 208 New Salem Rd., Port Ewen, NY for Assault in the Second Degree, a Felony.

Deputies responded to a report of a victim of an assault at Hummel's Home Care at 208 New Salem Rd. in the Town of Esopus. Upon arrival an adult male was found inside the residence with serious facial injuries. He was treated by Esopus Ambulance and Mobile Life Support at the scene, and was ultimately airlifted to Albany Medical Center by a Lifenet helicopter. An investigation revealed that Lawson and the victim are both residents at Hummel's home care and are acquaintances. Both were intoxicated and at some point got into a fight outside the residence. Other residents observed the victim inside the residence, seriously injured and called 911 for assistance. Lawson left the scene when Deputies arrived and returned when he learned that he was being sought. Lawson was arrested and arraigned in the Town of Esopus Court, where he was remanded to UCJ in lieu of $2,500 cash/$5,000 bond. St. Remy fire department assisted at the scene.

The victim was being treated at Albany Medical Center for several facial fractures, lacerations and contusions.
