How not to drive

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Ulster County police arrested an allegedly-drunk driver in Esopus on a truly staggering litany of vehicular charges, after his '97 Ford entered the wrong lane on 9W and collided head-on with another car. From a press release we received this afternoon:

Deputies from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office report the arrest of Emiliano Oliver, 34, an illegal alien of 39 Prospect St., Kingston for Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Oliver was also issued several traffic tickets for unlicensed operator, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle, speed not reasonable and prudent, and failing to keep right.

Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a two car motor vehicle accident with head-on collision at the intersection of North Broadway and State Route 9W in the Town of Esopus. Through investigation it was determined Oliver operated a 1997 Ford and was turning right attempting to go northbound on Route 9W. Oliver proceeded onto 9W and into the southbound lane in the direction of oncoming traffic. A witness at the scene stated that Oliver appeared to increase his speed running vehicles off of the roadway. A 2005 Nissan, operated by David Madelone, 61, of Saugerties was unable to avoid Oliver resulting in both vehicles colliding.

Both drivers were transported by EMS to St. Francis Hospital for evaluation. Madelone received minor lacerations and burises. Oliver was evaluated and it was determined no injuries were present but due to Oliver's highly intoxicated state he was admitted for several hours for observation. Oliver was released to the custody of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office and arraigned in the Town of Esopus Court by Judge Grieco. Oliver was remanded to Ulster County Jail on $5000/$10000 bond.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of the Port Ewen Fire Department, Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, and Hudson Valley Ambulance.
