A pretty incredible traffic stop story out of Sullivan County this morning.
According to a State Police press release, an Ellenville driver named Jason E. Jeter was stopped by a state trooper on Rte. 17 yesterday morning for a traffic violation.
Then things went off the rails. After talking with the trooper, Jeter allegedly got back into his car and drove off, dragging the trooper with him. The trooper, who has not been identified, fired a shot at Jeter, wounding him. A police chance ending in a crash in the woods ensued. We'll let the press release take it from here:
The NEW YORK STATE POLICE at Wurtsboro, N. Y. announce the arrest of Jason E. Jeter 28 years old, of Berme Rd., Ellenville, N. Y. for Aggravated Assault Upon a Police Officer (Felony), Assault 2nd degree (Felony), Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree (Misdemeanor).
On September 29, 2010 at 11:00AM Jeter was stopped on St. Rt. 17 by Troopers for violating the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. After initially complying with the stop, Jeter sped off back onto St. Rt. 17, dragging a Trooper with his vehicle. The Trooper being dragged fired one shot at Jeter, striking him. After the Trooper was thrown from the vehicle at high speed, Jeter continued to flee west bound, while being pursued by the Troopers. He attempted to exit St. Rt. 17, lost control of his vehicle at exit 114, and crashed into the woods. Jeter then ran from the crashed vehicle, and was subdued by other responding Troopers without further incident.
Jeter was charged as above, arraigned in the Town of Mamakating Court, and was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of No Bail, pending further court proceedings.
