Kingston residents are furious today over a shooting around 8pm yesterday evening on Clinton Avenue, whose perpetrator is still unknown and at-large.* From the Daily Freeman:
Neighbors said they heard four shots and then saw a man lying in front of 84 Clinton Ave. and a car driving away. Police did not say how many bullets struck the man.
Police said they were looking for a black car with tinted windows in connection with the case.
Many commenters on the story at dailyfreeman.com are incensed. Here's one:
Another shooting in Kingston- And in the same area. I do not understand why Kingston Police do not take an old abandoned building and make it into a station. What happened to the one on Broadway across from Henry St.? If the police were in the middle of this area and constantly out showing a presence it may make a difference. God hep us all if a child was shot in the cross fire. Residents need to get angry and make a lot of noise. This is not going to go away on it's own.
Another, who says s/he is a member of the recently-formed Kingston Neighborhood Watch, is frustrated by the difficulty of getting neighborhood-wide crime prevention efforts off the ground:
...On a recent walk through that neighborhood there were many comments from the local residents and while most of them were positive, there were some that point to a larger issue. More than one person asked us if someone had died, and others gave us veiled threats and warnings, ...still others claimed that we weren't a part of that hood because of the way we looked and they'd never seen us before despite many of us living right next door. You are 100% correct in saying we need to get out there and show a presence, but it's one thing to suggest it and another to actually put boot to soil...
*Update: Police have identified a suspect in the shooting. From the Freeman:
Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews identified 22-year-old Albert Lawing of Maple Street, who goes by the street name "Burt," as a suspect in the shooting.
"He was an individual who was slashed in a fight on Cedar Street," Matthews said. "He has a severe laceration from his cheek to his neck. We believe the attack last night was in retaliation."
