Arkville man struck and killed walking on Route 28

Jay Todd of Arkville was killed last night when he was struck by a car, while walking on Route 28 in Arkville Middletown.* A press release issued today by the Delaware County Sheriff's Department:

On Wednesday evening Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies investigated a car – pedestrian accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Middletown that claimed the life of an Arkville man.

Investigation revealed that 28 year old Jay P. Todd of Arkville was walking in the north bound lane of St. Hwy. 28, near the center of the roadway, when he was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by 84 year old Sheldon Sife of Fleischmanns.   Sife was not injured.

Todd was transported to Margaretville Memorial Hospital and was later transported to Albany Medical Center where he died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident.

The cause of the accident has been attributed to pedestrian intoxication and the dark, rainy conditions at the time of the accident.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle.

Route 28 in Arkville is a dangerous combination: many cars rushing through on their way somewhere else, lots of pedestrian traffic, and no sidewalks along much of its length. Maybe it's time to look into whether there's anything that could be done to make it safer for everyone.

Correction: Apologies. I read this release a little too quickly. The commenter below says the accident wasn't in Arkville -- re-reading it, I'm realizing the press release didn't say it was. As for the personal opinion expressed above, it's just that, an opinion. Take it with the proverbial grain of salt.
