Pizza Garden at the Round Barn Farmers' Market

Transition Catskills is planting a Pizza Garden on the grounds of the historic Round Barn on Saturday, June 20th, from 9 am to 2 pm. The installation will last throughout the summer.

What is a Pizza Garden? It’s where you grow the vegetable toppings for your favorite food. Imagine a 10-foot garden shaped like a pizza pie big enough to feed a hungry giant—with jumbo slices, a thick rock crust, and overflowing with all the ingredients for a tasty tomato sauce.

Each week, visitors to the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market will be able to check on the plants' progress. The bounty will grow and grow until it’s time for a harvest party at the end of the summer, followed the next week by a pizza-making party.

To celebrate the garden, the Catskill Mountains Artisans Guild is planning various crafts workshops each Saturday during the market. Kids will learn how to:

  •  Make felted vegetables
  •  Construct a tiny scarecrow
  •  Paint a segment of the rock crust

Gardening provides an excellent opportunity to bond with children away from electronic devices, to experience fresh air, sunshine and exercise outdoors, to discover the natural world, and to teach a useful skill. Kids enjoy eating what they grow, so gardening may also help to expand young palates and improve their diets with fresh, homegrown vegetables and herbs. When gardening is turned into a playful and joyous endeavor, the child receives a source of enjoyment that will last a lifetime.

Come by and pick up instructions to create your very own Pizza Garden! See you at the market!

The Round Barn is located on Route 30 Halcottsville (about 5 miles north of Margaretville). The Pakatakan farmers' market runs every Saturday, 9 am to 2 pm, from mid-May to mid-October.
