Three motorcycles were involved in a crash near Snyder's Tavern on Route 28A in West Shokan on Sunday, Aug. 23 that seriously injured one driver, police say.
That driver was in stable condition as of Wednesday, Aug. 26, according to State Police Lieutenant Jared Duffy.
The crash is one of many that occurred in the towns Shandaken and Olive this week -- four crashes, one fatal, happened on nearby Route 28 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Route 28A is a side road that splits off from Route 28 in the town of Olive and winds around the back of the Ashokan Reservoir. On Sunday at 12:02 p.m., three motorcyclists were driving north on 28A when the lead cyclist turned left into the driveway of Snyder's Tavern at 4161 Route 28A, Duffy said.
Due to "unsafe speed," the first motorcycle turned on its side and began to slide, Duffy said.
The second driver swerved to avoid the first driver, hit the guardrail on the side of the road and was ejected over an embankment. That driver flew about 10 feet and sustained a "large puncture wound to the torso," Duffy said.
The third motorcycle then turned to avoid the first two, fell on its side and slid, Duffy said.
The driver of the second bike sustained the worst injuries in the crash, and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, according to Duffy.
The crash is still under investigation, Duffy said, and so far no tickets have been issued.
