Ambulance and cars crash in Town of Ulster

An ambulance rushing to a medical emergency on Rte. 9W this morning in the Town of Ulster attempted to turn against a light and collided with two cars, according to the Daily Freeman:

The accident occurred at 10:09 a.m. at the intersection of Ulster Avenue and Frank Sottile Boulevard and held up traffic for about half an hour, [Town of Ulster Police Chief Matthew] Taggard said. He said a Mobile Life Ambulance was northbound on U.S. Route 9W with its lights and sirens on responding to a medical emergency at the Walmart store on Frank Sottile Boulevard. The ambulance attempted to turn right at the intersection just as the traffic light turned green, Taggard said.

A 2006 Buick driven by Albert Monarchi, 68, of Rhinebeck, started forward with the light and collided with the passenger side of the ambulance, Taggard said. He said the resulting collision caused a 2009 Pontiac driven by David Laporte, 50, of Ellenville to also be struck. Both cars had been at the light waiting to continue northbound, Taggard said. He said both drivers said they did not see the ambulance, which was driven by Mobile Life employee Susan Thompson.
