The sun is hot, days are long, fireflies are flashing, and though the solstice has not arrived, it feels like summer is here. With summer comes one of the culinary pleasures of the Great Western Catskills…the local farmers’ market! All across Delaware County, from Sidney to Halcottsville, Deposit to Hobart, markets are opening for the season and offering locally grown fruits and vegetables, meats, artisan cheeses and breads, preserved goods, maple products and many other delectable edibles. So explore a market and support local small farmers while relishing the bounty of the landscape.
DEPOSIT, SIDNEY & WALTON
Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Delaware County is sponsoring three markets this year, in Deposit, Sidney and Walton.
The Deposit Farmers’ Market will be open on two Thursdays this summer, August 21 and September 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the United Methodist Church on 2nd Street, in Deposit.
The Walton Farmers’ Market will kick off at 2 Titus Place on Wednesday, July 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and run on the first and third Wednesdays of each month through October. Both markets will feature produce from Brookside Market Garden and meat from the Catskill Cattle Company. The Walton Market will also feature Russell’s Produce and Products.
The Sidney Farmers’ Market will be open every Tuesday, beginning on July 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., through the end of September at 89 Main Street, Sidney. Produce will be available from Brookside Market Garden and Whitetail Meadow Farm.
All three of the markets sponsored by CCE participate in the 2014 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) through WIC and Delaware County Office for the Aging.
DELHI
The Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Delhi Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays through September, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Court House Square in Delhi. Offering a wide selection of local produce, cheeses, baked goods, a variety of meats, maple products, eggs, flowers and plants, this market is a one-stop shopping experience. HOBART
The Hobart Farmers’ Market offers up Friday night fun from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 101 Maple Avenue, Hobart. Enjoy a varied selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, crafts and antiques with live music! It’s fun for the whole family!
ANDES
Two markets in one town on one day… a dream come true! And that is exactly what can be found on Saturdays in Andes. The open-air Andes Farmers’ Market is open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. next to the Tin Horn on Main Street. Fruits and vegetables, meats and baked goods are all available. Down the street at 143 Main Street, the Andes Indoor Farmers’ Market is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a selection of baked goods, cheeses, eggs, honey, jams, jellies, chutneys, maple products, meats, poultry and produce.
HALCOTTSVILLE
The Pakatakan Farmers’ Market, operating every Saturday through mid-October from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the historic Round Barn in Halcottsville, is a popular spot for shopping and socializing. With a range of local meats, fish, cheeses, produce, breads and plants, as well as, jewelry, soaps, quilts, wool and wood products, every shopper is bound to head home happy.
FRANKLIN
The Franklin Farmers’ Market at Chapel Hall is held every Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Institute Street through Columbus Day. Herbs, garden vegetables, home-baked goods, eggs, cheese, goat cheese, jams, meats, flowers, flower baskets, produce, soaps, lotions, honey, herbal teas, spices, farm-raised wool and alpaca blankets, socks and hand forged craft items are all available.
The Great Western Catskills are a beautiful and bountiful place. There is no better way to get out and enjoy the abundance of Delaware County than at the local farmers markets!
