Birds of Chicago, June 28, Roots band

June 28

Birds of Chicago

Saturday, 8 PM

Roots band

You’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. JT Nero and Allison Russell, two of the most compelling new voices in North American roots music, front the four-piece, multi-instrumental collective. Nero’s “soulful, idiosyncratic, and rich vocal style” and Russell’s “beautiful, supple range” (Toledo Blade) deliver clever and quirky songs of human emotions, of the familiar and strange (as in the tune “Moonglow Tapeworm,” which No Depression magazine called “part savvy street poetry, part surrealism”). Following a ten-day spring tour with the Carolina Chocolate Drops (WKC 2007), they toured the U.K. and Ireland before making this WKC debut.

“Hailed as one of the year's best roots debuts by the Chicago Sun-Times and L.A. Times, and exuding the kind of radiant harmonies and easy acoustic familiarity…that are difficult to fake”—Houston Press.
