History shines June 7-8

Headwaters History Days, a new two-day celebration of the history, culture, folklife and landscape of the East Branch Delaware River towns of Middletown, Roxbury and Andes, will be held June 7 and 8.

Fifteen museums, landmark structures and historic sites will be open to the public at no charge for one or both days. This collaborative event is part of the larger, statewide Path Through History Weekend shining a light on the power of history in our contemporary lives.

Docents will be on hand to explain the significance of their sites, a walking tour will be offered on Sunday in the hamlet of Roxbury, and two concerts of home-grown music – at Woodchuck Lodge Saturday, and at the Historical Society of Middletown on Sunday --  will serve up history in song.

The Delaware & Ulster Rail Road will offer 2 for 1 rides on its excursions between Arkville to Roxbury for the 2014 season to anyone displaying a Headwaters of History ‘passport’ which can be picked up at any participating site during this special weekend.

A complete schedule, map and additional site information can be found at www.headwatershistorydays.org. A special publication with details on the event and articles about the historic sites, published by the Delaware County Times, can be picked up at the Central Catskills Chamber of Commerce, Main St., Margaretville, and at any of the sites during the weekend.

A slide show can be viewed at www.powerofhistory.org.

Support comes from the O’Connor Foundation, participating organizations and local businesses.
