Tonight’s Show: Catskill Trees with Gary Mead – Black Walnut

On tonight’s show we’ll be talking about the BLACK WALNUT TREEwith Gary Mead.  Every tree is different, and there is always something unique & special we find out about it.  Every 3rd Wednesday From the Forest talks with local sawmill owner and woodworker – Gary Mead.  Each program of the series will discuss one of the Catskills tree species in detail.  We will cover basic information of the tree, its traditional and current uses, woodworking abilities, and any other information held secretly within its bark.  Gary is the owner of Fruitful FurnishingsFruitful Furnishings began in 1979 as a custom furniture shop.  Within ten years, a sawmill was added for producing dimension parts and providing custom sawing, planing, and kiln drying services to customers wishing to furnish their homes with wood from their own trees.  Gary has also opened to the public – Gary Mead Gallery – located at the mill-site, which showcases one-of-a-kind pieces made from wood.  Tune in at 91.3 FM or stream online @ www.wioxradio.org to learn more.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?

Warm days (above freezing) and freezing nights means maple sugaring… right?  Well, it is January, but you could tap right now the way the weather is.  The sap is running.  I tapped one maple tree behind the house and it’s running.  But, just because the sap’s running, doesn’t mean the sugarmaker is.  I’m waiting for at least February this year.  Last year I tapped during the last week of January!  This weekend is forecasted for colder and more seasonable weather though and should cause the sap flow to cease for awhile.  Days are getting longer and spring is surely coming when buckets or tubing is itching to be hung on the trees.

May the forest be with you,
