Joseph Markulin, Historic and Comic Author
Yesterdays’ News at the Roxbury Corner Store will host a book talk and signing on Saturday, November 16, 2013, from 3-5 pm with Joseph Markulin, author of Machiavelli: A Renaissance Life. Booklist aptly characterized this impressive tome as “an enjoyable romp through a fascinating period in European history.” In a review in the Wall Street Journal, distinguished political scientist David Polansky astutely discerns the Florentine narrative’s “ingenuous plot twists.”
Joe Markulin is a defrocked professor of Italian and Comparative literature with a specialization in Medieval and Renaissance studies. After a brief but brilliant academic career including publications on subjects ranging from Dante, Boccaccio and Machiavelli to Fellini and contemporary Italian cinema, he moved to New York where he joined the fast moving, not to say Machiavellian world of public relations. In addition to speechwriting, annual reports and corporate histories, he has ghosted reams of articles and op-ed pieces that have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, etc.
The author currently lives in an impregnable fortress in the Catskills in upstate New York where he raises organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, chickens, and small, edible mammals. When not meticulously restoring old barns, gracious farmsteads and other historically significant structures, he is a disc jockey at WIOX where he hosts In Heaven There Is No Beer, a weekly radio show billed as “late night accordion music for consenting adults.”
