Ed Potokar Leads Audio Artists at Potophonics Opening
Ed Potokar, creator of the extraordinary potophonics exhibit currently on at The Orphic Gallery in Roxbury, has announced some of the musicians who will join him at the concert in Spillian on Saturday, August 24th. The lineup includes Alice Malloy, Scott Williams, Frank Coelho, all original members of Audio Artists, and the incomparable Michael Suchorsky who performed with Lou Reed in the mid/late 70s and early 80s. Special guest announcements will assuredly ensue.
The concert will follow an afternoon workshop in which Ed will share with the attendees his creative methods and processes in conceiving and executing his finely crafted instruments. Ed’s presentation will be followed by a DIY session where participants will craft their own stumpf fiddles.
What is stumpf fiddle one might ask? A folk instrument that morphed from the rhythm sticks of Central European music, stumpf fiddles look like a what would happen if a bluegrass band, a covey of clowns, and a hiker all collided. A soundboard, bell, horn, cymbals, and any other marvelously silly noise-making instrument are appended to a walking stick and played with a drumstick or by banging the whole contraption on the ground. Or pretty much however you want to. There aren’t a lot of rules in the world of the stumpf fiddle.
Come and birth your own stumpf fiddle! How have you lived without one? Or you may simply come for the lavish dinner and high-tech hootenanny.
