Theme weeks at Hanford Mills Museum
Visitors to Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith receive a guided tour of the Mill complex with Museum interpreters. The tour includes demonstrations of our 1926 Fitz overshot waterwheel, sawmill and historic woodworking machinery.
In addition to the demo-filled tour, Hanford Mills Museum offers a series of special activities, to connect you to the Mill and its history.
June 19-23: Wood
Trees are an important natural resource at Hanford Mills Museum. We mill logs into boards and turn those boards into a variety of Mill products. We also use wood byproducts to power the steam boiler. This week we’ll feature all of the ways that we use wood at the Mill.
June 26-30: The Hanfords
Come and learn more about the family that the Museum’s name honors. The Hanfords owned the Mill and operated the neighboring farm from 1860-1945. Mill tours and activities will feature some of the Hanford family members and the roles they played at the Mill and in East Meredith. On Saturday, June 29 from 11 am to 4 pm, Kevin Q Gray will be demonstrating modern tintype photography. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Horace and Ralph Hanford took many photos of the Mill and the region.
July 3-7: Water
Hanford Mills uses water in all three of its states: liquid water in the waterwheel, gas in the steam engine, and ice that we harvest and use to make ice cream at our Independence Day Celebration July 4. Come and explore all of the ways that we use water at the Museum.
Children 12 and under, and Museum members receive free admission. Admission for adults and teens is $8.50, for seniors, $6.50. Active duty military and their families receive free admission as well.
