Carol White, “Peak Experiences: Danger, Death, and Daring in the Mountains of the Northeast”

By paula, Mon, 11/19/2012 - 9:17 pm

The Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild will present authors Carol and David White who will discuss hiking hazards and best safety practices in the high peaks of the Catskills, Adirondacks, and New England during a slide presentation to be held at the “Community ArtSpace” on Black Friday. Nov.23 from 4-6pm, 785 Main Street, Margaretville. Refreshments will be served.

Meet the authors, who learned firsthand about frostbite, at a wine and cheese gathering following the program.  Carol's latest book, Peak Experiences: Danger, Death, and Daring in the Mountains of the Northeast comes out in October, published by the University Press of New England;  copies will be available at the Artisans Guild.  The Whites collaborated with the National Geographic Society in 2011 to produce a new Catskill Park Trails Illustrated map that is now packaged with their guidebook, Catskill Trails, published by the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK), for which the Whites measured 350 miles of Catskill Forest Preserve trails with a surveying wheel.  Catskill Trails will be available, as well as their Catskill Day Hikes for All Seasons and Catskill Peak Experiences: Mountaineering Tales from the Catskill 3500 Club.

The Whites completed winter climbs of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, the 48 White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the 35 high peaks of the Catskills.  David is membership chairman of the Catskill 3500 Club and Carol is conservation chair.  He served as a director of ADK from 2004-2010, and Carol served on the executive committee of the Adirondack 46ers from 2003-2007.  She received the Susan B. Anthony Legacy Award with polar explorer Ann Bancroft and long-distance swimmer Lynne Cox in 2007.

This free community event is sponsored by the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild. The “Community ArtSpace” is funded in part by a grant from the Small Business Development Fund administered by the MARK Project.
