Learn to Play Go Workshop starts October 10!

The West Kortright Centre is presenting its second year of the Learn to Play Go Workshop on October 10, 11, and 12 from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Go expert John Exter will introduce the fundamental principals and rules of the ancient Oriental game of Go. Go players insist that this board game is much more complex and intricate than chess, but it is easy to learn. Students will learn the basic rules while getting an introduction to the fascinating thousand-year history of the game. Some opening, middle, and end game theory will be discussed. This workshop is for both total beginners and those with some prior knowledge of Go. Mr. Exter will play several simultaneous games with students, and there will be an informal ‘tournament’ between students on the last evening of class, with sake.

John Exter has been playing Go for more than 30 years. He played for many years at the New York Go Club, serving as its president for two years. He has been an active member of the Brooklyn Go Club since the ‘80s. Exter studied under professional Go player Janice Kim and has attended several workshops with various professional Go players. He is rated as an amateur 1-Dan player (the equivalent of a martial arts black belt).

The workshop fee is $45/$35 for WKC Members. For more information, call (607) 278-5454 or visit www.westkc.org and go to ‘workshops’ TheCentre is located midway between Oneonta, Delhi, and Stamford.
