Persian Miniatures & Calligraphy Workshop
With artist Roshan Houshmand
Ages 7 and up.
In this educational and entertaining 2-day workshop, students will be exploring several aspects of Persian art. On day one, there will be a short Power Point presentation on Islamic and Persian art and architecture followed by two projects: painting carpet designs on canvas bookmarks and embossing Persian designs on copper. On day two the projects will include an introduction to the Farsi alphabet, practicing calligraphy using reed pens and ink, and doing a Persian miniature painting.
Iranian-American artist Roshan Houshmand was born in the Philippines. She has B.A., M.A., and M.F.A. degrees in fine arts. She has lived in the U.S., Iran, Spain, Italy, the Philippines, and Cyprus, with extensive time spent traveling the world.
Ms. Houshmand’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Europe and the U.S. She is a 2005 and 2010 recipient of N.Y. State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grants and a 2006 grant recipient from the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies Program for the exhibition “21st Century American Women Artists” at Truman Hall, U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium. In 2010 she also received an SOS Grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts as well as an Olive and Lindsay B. O’Connor Foundation grant.
Ms. Houshmand has taught art courses at Penn State, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and the Community College of Allegheny County. She currently is an adjunct professor at SUNY Delhi. She lives in Andes.
