Congregation Bnai Israel’s summer book club will discuss Anna Yezierska’s novel, The Breadgivers, starting at 2 PM, on Thursday, August 20th, at the synagogue at 347 Wagner Ave. in Fleischmanns. This masterwork of American immigrant literature is set in the 1920s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi who rebels against her father’s rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. Sarah’s struggle toward independence and self-fulfillment resonates with a passion all can share. Further information about the novel and the book discussion club can be found on the Bnai Israel website at http://bnai-israel-fleischmanns-ny.org/events/book-discussion-group.
