After falling into a ditch, a 71-year-old man almost freezes to death in Davenport

A 71-year-old Davenport man sustained severe frostbite and may lose his fingers and toes after he fell into a ditch the night of Jan. 13 and spent eight hours outside in severe cold. The Mountain Eagle has the story:

According to his older brother Paul, Vincent Insalaco, 71, owns a residence on Layman Road in the town of Davenport. The fierce periods of cold weather encountered this winter forced Insalaco to reconsider his living at his residence, and he opted to move to Oneonta to sit out the cold spell in a motel room. He called for a taxi, but the driver refused to drive up to Insalaco’s front door. So, the older gentleman agreed to walk down to meet the taxi on a better roadway. In the process of walking, Insalaco slipped and fell into the ditch and the cab driver never saw him. It turned around and returned to town. Meanwhile, Insalaco remained in the ditch, and remained outside throughout the night.

The paper reports that Insalaco was found by a neighbor around 1:30 a.m. the next morning. His heart rate was reportedly down to 15 beats a minute. He has been in the hospital since the incident.

According to Weather Underground, the temperatures in the Albany area the night of Jan. 13 were as low as negative 2 degrees.
