This weekend: Light up the Dark in Callicoon

The winter solstice, the darkest day of the year, is this Sunday, Dec. 21. In Callicoon, a group of local artists are leading a community lantern walk to light up the longest night. Walkers will hear stories and carry lanterns through a 30-foot labyrinth to honor the souls of the dead. From organizer Laura Moran:

We will put the finishing touches on handmade lanterns, record stories about “Legacy” for the Confluence Project, and hear a shadow story about “The Lantern Prince.” Then, following the Lead Lantern, created by Michael Carpenter, and NACL Theatre Weather Project Chorus, we will walk our lanterns through Callicoon Creek Park, lit simply in white to pay respect to those souls we lost this year… as well as those who joined us! A 30-ft lit labyrinth, designed by John Roth and Mark Keoppen, will guide walkers to the center where we will create luminaria representing hopes and dreams that will be a path to guide us. Damascus Methodist minister Jane Morris will offer a short non-denominational blessing on the PA/NY bridge and then we sing ourselves back to The Weigh Station for hot cocoa!

Bring your own lantern, or, if you don't have one, you can make one for free at a lantern-making workshop being held in Callicoon on Friday, Dec. 19. Details below.

Lantern-making workshop, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 19, and Light up the Dark Lantern Walk, 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21, North School Studio's Weigh Station, 12 Main Street, Callicoon.
