Letter to the Editor: Woodstock merchants support the Catskill Mountain Rail Trail

To the Ulster County Legislature,

As merchants in Woodstock, NY, we are acutely aware of how important tourism is for the local economy. We have been fortunate to be a tourist destination for many years. At this moment, we are seeing many other local towns expanding their appeal to tourists and each of these areas is vying for these same tourist dollars. Hudson NY, Rhinebeck NY, Great Barrington MA, Millerton NY and many others are creating destinations that have a multitude of tourist attractions.

The Catskill Mountain Rail Trail would be a significant asset for the merchants of Woodstock as well as for the entire Rte. 28 corridor. The data from many other rail trails makes clear that it is a great opportunity for stimulating economic development and tourism. The kind of tourism it brings is environmentally sound, would be economically lucrative, and help ensure the future vitality of our businesses and communities. The scope of this trail would be world class; incomparable beauty and proximity to NYC make it a perfect weekend destination.

Please don’t let our communities fall behind by not taking advantage of this county-owned resource. We strongly urge you to support the creation of the Catskill Mountain Rail Trail connected to Ulster County’s Rail Trail network.
