Plattekill man fatally shot in Newburgh hunting accident

According to several news accounts, a man from the Ulster County town of Plattekill was shot and killed by his friend in a hunting accident on Monday afternoon, while the two were hunting together in the woods west of Forest Road in Newburgh.

Police identified the deceased as 48-year-old Timothy Evans, and the shooter as 39-year-old Guy Wensley, also of Plattekill. The Daily Freeman reports that Evans was wearing camouflage.

The Times Herald-Record reports that no charges have been filed, although the investigation is ongoing:

[Newburgh police chief Michael] Clancy said that Wensley told authorities he thought he was shooting at a deer.

“He (Wensley) fires,” Clancy said. “Apparently the guy yells and he realizes that he just shot his buddy…He did have a scope on the rifle. No matter how you look at it, it is a tragedy.”
