Bainbridge pilot Milton Petzold crashed his Piper Comanche airplane into the Susquehanna River in Sidney this afternoon, not long after taking off from the Sidney Airport. The plane had no other passengers, and Petzold walked away from the crash.
According to Fox 40 WICZ TV, Petzold was aiming for the river:
Pilot Milton Petzold of Bainbridge says he made the rough landing after he lost fuel pressure.
The pilot told his rescuers he was going to land in the park, but as soon as he saw children playing, he headed for the river instead.
WBNG-TV talked to a couple of witnesses to the crash:
"I ran over and he was already out of the plane," said Larry Sherman, a witness on the scene. "[The pilot] had a cut [on his face], other than that he was just pretty shook up."
