According to a press release from the State Police in Kingston, a man who fled police in Kingston early this morning was shot by an Ulster County Sheriff's Deputy during an altercation in a Van Deusen Street backyard.
The man, 28-year-old Raymond Snyder of Kingston, is in critical but stable condition the Albany Medical Center today, according to the release.
The encounter began when state troopers attempted to stop Raymond for driving a Honda with an inadequate exhaust system. Raymond reportedly refused to stop and began "speeding through the city streets attempting to evade the pursuing patrols." He allegedly jumped out of his car when he was blocked by an Ulster County Sheriff's vehicle and ran into the backyard of a residence on Van Deusen Street, where, reportedly, "an altercation" occurred between him and the unnamed Ulster County Sheriff's Deputy.
The press release, which you can read in full below, does not give much detail about why the deputy allegedly shot Snyder, but states that the matter will be investigated by the Ulster County District Attorney's Office.
SP Kingston - Shooting Investigation
During the early morning hours of April 15th, 2011 Troopers from the SP Kingston barracks observed a 1995 Honda operating on Broadway in the City of Kingston with an inadequate exhaust system. The Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to comply and began speeding through the city streets attempting to evade the pursuing patrols. The pursuit was joined by units from the City of Kingston and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. While traveling on Van Deusen Street near Broadway, the Honda’s path was blocked by an Ulster County Sheriff’s unit. The operator, subsequently identified as Raymond Snyder, age 28, of Kingston fled from the vehicle and ran into a back yard on Van Deusen St. An altercation occurred and the suspect was shot by an Ulster County Sheriff’s Deputy. Snyder was transported to the Kingston Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Albany Medical Center where he is listed in critical but stable condition. Snyder is expected to be charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Endangerment and Vehicle and Traffic Charges upon his release. The New York State Police at Kingston are investigating the case in conjunction with the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Kingston Police Department.
