Five-year-old gets left behind on school bus in Catskill

A bus driver and an aide transporting Pre-K and kindergarten students to Catskill Elementary School on Monday morning parked a bus in a Wal-Mart parking lot with a 5-year-old girl sleeping inside, according to the Daily Mail and the Daily Freeman. When the girl woke up, she reportedly began walking along Rte. 9W, where she was spotted and taken to school safe and sound.

The Catskill school superintendent, Kathleen Farrell, told the Daily Freeman yesterday that both adults involved in the incident won't be riding buses again anytime soon:

Kathleen Farrell said the district contracts with Coxsackie Transport and First Student to provide bus transportation for its students but has the right of refusal regarding the contractors’ staff. She said a driver and aide who work for Coxsackie Transport will be barred from working in the Catskill school district again after a 5-year-old girl was left on a bus Monday morning.

“Neither the aide or the driver will be permitted to work in our district again,” Farrell said on Tuesday.
