The Cannonsville Adventure Triathlon, a bike/run/kayak event planned for the first weekend in June on the Cannonsville Reservoir, has been cancelled. From an announcement on the CAT race's official blog:
We are sorry to announce, but the organizing committee for the inaugural Cannonsville Adventure Triathlon has decided to cancel the event due to low registration numbers.
We will be posting a joint press release here shortly to explain the reasons and future possibilities. Thank you for your interest.
It's unfortunate that this one didn't work out. The CAT race had symbolic importance as the first big event planned on the Cannonsville since the New York City Department of Environmental Protection first opened the reservoir to recreational boating three years ago, and organizers had pinned high hopes on the triathlon. From a press release announcing the event in March:
“The Cannonsville Reservoir Pilot Boating Program is real-time demonstration of a collaborative project that has the potential to conclusively prove that economic development and water quality protection can coexist,” said Michael Triolo, Economic Development Director for the Catskill Watershed Corporation. “CWC has funded the pilot program to encourage boaters to use and enjoy the fabulous landscape and pristine water that are the reservoirs. We are particularly excited the CAT will bring in participants and spectators to what will hopefully become an annual event on not only the Cannonsville but also other DEP reservoirs.”
