That's a helpful reminder from the Times Herald-Record, which is reporting on a phone scam in Saugerties that involves a call from a fictional police squad code-named URGENT:
Complaints are pouring in to the Saugerties Police Department about calls from a man impersonating a town police officer, asking for credit card information to help with an investigation. In one call, the man identified himself as a detective with the URGENT Task Force.
The reporter writing the story says that you only have to keep in mind one thing to avoid being swindled:
Hint: The police don’t need your credit card number to help in any investigations.
UPDATE: Er, there's some egg on my face. There really is an URGENT Task Force. Guess that's why this scam was so effective.
