Flickr user mountaintrekker2001 came across this handsome eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) on a recent hike in the Mohonk Preserve. Within a few years, if it's lucky enough to survive, this bright juvenile -- called a "red eft" -- will find a nice pond, settle down and turn a much less punk rock olive-green color.
Another local splash of color: The Red Eft Gallery in Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, is celebrating its current 17-artist show "Outside/Inside" with a closing reception this weekend.
