Catskills Learning Co-op meets tonight

A grass-roots community teaching and learning cooperative is having its second meeting ever tonight in Andes, and organizer Laurie "Story Laurie" McIntosh is talking it up in the local newspapers. In an article on Saturday in the Daily Star, McIntosh told reporter Patricia Breakey about the Catskill Learning Cooperative's plans to help locals help themselves:

Learning co-op co-founder Laurie McIntosh said she came up with the idea of forming a cooperative to encourage a general sharing of skills and joined forces with Sarah Mesh and Dawn Synan, both of Delhi ... "I have a great longing to create a sense of community and to encourage activities that myself and my family would like to avail themselves of," McIntosh said. "I love to learn from other people, particularly because I home-school my children."

The Watershed Post attended the CLC's first meeting in Andes last month, where kids galumphed while adults noshed on potluck and brainstormed about possible classes they could take and teach. We wrote about it and the CLC's part in a region-wide trend of DIY educational organizing here.
