30-year-old drowns in front of campers

The Times-Herald Record has the tragic story of Betzalel Levin, a camp counselor from Brooklyn who drowned in White Lake yesterday within feet of a life preserver and a boatload of campers. It's unclear why Levin, who dove off a rented boat in order to take a swim, suddenly began to struggle:

VanDunk said she saw Levin struggle in the water shortly after he dove in and she called 911. People from Levin's boat tried to throw him a life jacket, and it landed in the water no more than 10 feet away from him, VanDunk said.

Though Levin made an attempt to swim to the life jacket, he quickly disappeared under the water. Upon seeing this, VanDunk's husband, James VanDunk, dove in after Levin, along with another man from Levin's boat. But they were unable to locate him.>

Levin's body hasn't been found despite a three-hour search, and police don't think that alcohol played a role in the incident.
