Wednesday Night’s Show: Primitive Bow Making with JWB Bows

There are some interesting individuals doing some interesting things in these hills. One Ulster County resident is making bows by hand. How is this From the Forest you ask? Jason – from JWB Bows – turns hickory trees into sleek and powerful composite bows, by hand! Now that’s From the Forest to the… bow?! Yes, some look at trees and see maple syrup. Some see fine lumber, a nice Windsor chair, or fine cabinetry. And some see a beautiful bow tucked somewhere inside those straight-grained fibers. Tune in at 91.3 FM or stream online @ www.wioxradio.org to learn more.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?

Maple sugaring, that’s what! Yeah, it’s been a late year, but we take what we get, for we really have no other choice. The next week looks decent, besides the predicted cooler weather early next week. The 10 day forecast is calling for some warmer weather by the end, perhaps too warm for those in lower elevations. If the low-time temperatures creep up above freezing, the season may be over since the sap will shut off. We’ll see. Bye this time last year my season was already over and I made 25 gallons of syrup; this time around I only have 5! However, if my math is correct, that’s 5 more gallons than I had before I began; though you can bet I’ll be more conservative with its usage this time around.

May the forest be with you,
