Wednesday Night’s Show: Apple Tree Care with Charlie Blume

On Wednesday night’s show we’ll be talking about Apple Tree Care with Charlie Blume. Charlie is a certified arborist and has over thirty years of experience in tree removal. However, his real passion is in apple trees. Charlie has experience in both establishing a new orchard, and restoring neglected, old, apple trees back to a fruitful condition. We’ll discuss the ins & outs of apple tree pruning in depth. Tune in at 91.3 FM or stream online @ www.wioxradio.org to learn more.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?

Maple sugaring season has officially begun for some, but will be taking a hiatus, or at least for a week. Colder weather has set back in and will delay the season at least a week into March. Last week the sap had been running well, and some syrup could be made. Sugar contents – for me – were average at 2.0%. At 2.0%, it requires 42 gallons of maple sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. We were predicting an average year due to last fall’s bumper seed crop the maples experienced. Since seed takes energy and carbohydrates to produce, sugar contents should theoretically be lower since energy was diverted. We’ll see.

May the forest be with you,
