Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County is pleased to offer a program on the commercial production of pumpkins, October 24, 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Cooperative Extension’s resource center, 34570 State Highway 10, Hamden, NY 13782. Sign-in will start at 9:30 a.m.

Vegetable specialist Dr. Stephen Reiners of Cornell will cover the nutrient requirements of pumpkins and best methods of fertilizer application. He will review recent work on the advantages of using transplants and/or plastic mulch for pumpkin establishment. Cornell plant pathologist Dr. Chris Smart will discuss the major diseases of pumpkins and the control methods for phytophthora blight and downy mildew. Capital District Extension specialist for the Capital District Vegetable Team, Chuck Bornt will discuss weed control and information on variety trials. Chuck will also discuss the major insect pests of pumpkins and the management options for their control. Participants will have time to talk one-on-one with the speakers during the lunch break.

The registration fee for this program is $10 per person – please make check payable to “Cornell Cooperative Extension” and indicate “pumpkins” on the check.
