Check out the Saugerties Farmers Market this Saturday

The Watershed Agricultural Council is featuring a different Catskills farmers' market every week during the 2013 growing season. This week's market is the Saugerties Farmers Market, located at 115 Main Street Saugerties on Saturdays from May 25 to October 19, 2013, 10am-2pm.

Enjoy some competition and a chef’s demo at the farmers market

Come to this week’s Saugerties Farmers market for the annual Tomato Taste-Off – a friendly competition for home growers and market famers alike. Have your tomatoes to the center tent by 10:30 a.m. to enter them in three competitions: tastiest cherry, tastiest full-sized, and heaviest tomato. Judges are Mayor Bill Murphy, chef James Tamayo, and Lynne Gilson, a former market committee member.  prizes this year are goft certificates  from Partition St. Wines,  Dig, and Rock Star Rodeo.   Prize categories for this year are; Taste for cherry tomato, taste for full size tomato and heaviest tomato.

To complement the tomato excitement, Richard Frisbie of the Hudson Valley Dessert Company will provide this week’s chef demo creating a black bean, corn and tomato salad. Be sure to pick up some of this season’s exceptional bounty of tomatoes, and all of the early apples. Other early fall vegetables, such as squash, are trickling in with the end of the season summer produce. Don’t forget to leave with some fresh seafood, and assorted meats. Art Lab’s weekly project is glass printing.  The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, through Oct. 19, at 115 Main St., across from Cahill Elementary School.

Mission   The mission of the Saugerties Farmers Market is to bring local seasonal food to market; preserve small family farms; promote healthy eating; build community; and attract visitors to historic Saugerties.

History  Established in 2001 by a group of Saugerties residents to bring fresh food from local farms to market. With the support of the Mayor, Village Board, and local businesses the market was set up at Market and Main Streets and subsequently moved to our current larger site at 115 Main Street, the Saugerties Central School District’s parking lot.

Just a few blocks from the business district, the market overlooks the Cowflop, a spacious green meadow with Catskill mountain views and is next to the Saugerties Historical Society’s Kiersted House.

The Saugerties Farmers Market provides the best of Hudson Valley produce and other farm products while at the same time providing a gathering place for the community to meet, eat, and greet.
