JOB DESCRIPTION


The New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP), Bureau of Communications & Intergovernmental Affairs is seeking an experienced Associate Public Information Specialist/Deputy Press Secretary.


The selected candidate will work as the Deputy Press Secretary for the Bureau of Communications & Intergovernmental Affairs in the Kingston, NY office and will manage, direct, plan and implement all contact with the media and all information released to the public, as well as, public education in the watershed; respond to general inquiries from citizens about issues of concern; prepare draft press releases and press advisories; stay current with media reports on environmental related articles and programs; assist in promoting new programs of the Agency through wider media coverage, website and customer service; attend press interviews with Agency officials; assist with special events; and assist in managing and developing the Agency’s social media presence.  In addition, the selected candidate will be required as needed, to travel to DEP’s Queens Office of Communications.  Candidate must perform 24 hour on call press duty as needed (required to be on call after business hours and on weekends and holidays).


 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with 24 credits in English, journalism or public relations and (2) years of satisfactory, full-time experience in public relations, journalism, or advertising; or


A satisfactory equivalent.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS


Must possess strong verbal & written communication skills.   A driver’s license valid in the State of New York is preferred.  Experience with video and digital media communications a plus.
