Willow Mixed Media documentary video shows feature Violets and Catskill Mountain House

With 2012 nearly upon us, it's time to mark your calendar for some area video showings that Willow Mixed Media has scheduled.

On January 14th we will be showing The Catskill Mountain House and The World Around to the Olive Historical Society.  They meet in the Olive Public Library and the meeting starts at 10AM.  The film won a Gold Remi Award at the 2011 Houston International Film Festival, and is in widespread distribution.  More information at documentaryworld.com.

February 12th will be the premiere of our newest documentary, Sweet Violets, about the forgotten history of the former Violet Capital of the World - Rhinebeck, NY.  This fascinating story covers the Dutchess County commercial growing of "sweet violets" that were all the rage as corsage and bouquet flowers from Victorian times through WWI.  It also tells the story of backyard wild violet varieties and their use as medicine and culinary delights.

The film explains the "violet-house" growing methods, the flower's historical and mythological past and the fashion changes and scandal that helped end this once vibrant industry.  Now, only one small row of commnercially grown violets remains on the east coast, as detailed in the film.

The premiere will be on February 12th at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck in conjunction with the Museum of Rhinebeck History.  Time of the showing is yet to be determined, so stay tuned.

The Sweet Violets film will also be shown at The Mountain Top Historical Society on May 18th. More details will follow.
