Foreign language books have been a surprise best seller in our book shop in Pine Hill. We often run across books in Spanish, German, or French when we buy boxes of books from other dealers and customers. We started to display them as a lark in a "foreign language section" just to get them out of the way. We were happy to find that many people pass through Pine Hill who read books in languages other than English. So far it has been German that is the most popular language. Old hands in the Catskills tell us that at one time there was a substantial German community visiting in Pine Hill, Fleishmanns, and Margaretville. So of the books brought by these people are evidently still circulating through book shops such as ours. The book in the picture is one of my favorites. It is an elementary reading book for Dutch children which has charming illustration of stories imparting basic Dutch cultural information. We bought it in an Amsterdam book stall on one of our trips threre several years ago. I hate to part with it, but I am sure it will find a new home eventually.
