Hinchey: You mean my personal deficit?

Last night's debate in Saugerties between incumbent Democratic congressman Maurice Hinchey and his Republican challenger George Phillips had some cute moments. At one point, Hinchey, who was asked about the federal deficit, feigned confusion about exactly which deficit seemed to be at issue, according to this video from the Phillips campaign. He then went on to explain that deficits have existed in this country for "well over 100 years."

Of course, Phillips jumped all over this opportunity to portray Hinchey as a spendthrift. According to the video, his response was swift:

I'm deeply troubled that a member of the House Appropriations committee couldn't fathom that we have a deficit problem.
