Wednesdays 6PM – 7PM

From the Forest will be interviewing John Blish. John is the owner of MOUNTAIN VALLEY that offers services in firewood, landscaping, site-work, snow removal, and dumpsters. We’ll ask John what it’s like owning & running a business in these Catskill Mountains, among other things. Tune in at 91.3 FM or stream online @ www.wioxradio.org to learn more.
WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?
Man has it been mild outside! I’ve burned hardly any wood; not really complaining about that though. However, it probably isn’t very good for deer hunting. Between the loud gunshots and warmer temperatures, deer seem to be more prone to move while it’s dark. Well, that’s hunting. Speaking of hunting, it does seem that the last two winters have had an effect on the Catskills deer population. Many of you are probably aware of how much I stress there being a food source and good quality habitat to support a healthy deer herd above anything else. I believe these hard winters, coupled with poor quality deer habitat will continue to have a significant effect on the herd. I feel deer hunting will only become more difficult into the future, unless we start to manage our forests better. You might ask, doesn’t less deer translate into healthier forests and meet CFA’s goal of healthy forests? No, not necessarily. Fewer deer living in a maturing forest can still keep up with the few plants that survive & grow in the forest understory. In other words, need to “cut, burn, and shoot” to help both future flora & fauna. CBS.
May the forest be with you,
Ryan Trapani
