Tonight’s Show: Catskill Tanning Industry

CFA-On-The-Air: From the Forest
Wednesdays 6PM – 7PM
WIOX ROXBURY 91.3FM or www.wioxradio.org

From the Forest will be discussing the history of the Catskill Tanning Industry. During the 1860s most of the leather used by the Union Army in the Civil War was created by the Catskill Tanning Industry. Hamlets throughout the Catskills owe their existence to this once bustling industry made possible by entrepreneurship, and an abundant supply of eastern hemlock trees and mountain-streams. Tune in and learn more at 91.3 FM or stream online at www.wioxradio.org.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST? Beautiful ride on the way to work this morning from Boiceville to Arkville; really because of one particular tree too. Black locust flowers are in full bloom and can easily be seen from the road-side. They don’t climb too much up the mountain; probably since they are not tolerant of much shade and the forest was last to regrow near the valley and roadway. In any case, they’re a beautiful string of white flowers, and tasty too.

May the forest be with you,
