The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.3 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire five (5) Watershed Maintainers (WSM) for its offices located in the village of Margaretville, New York. Working under the supervision of a Supervisor, Watershed Maintenance, or other qualified personnel, the Watershed Maintainer, using computerized, electronic and mechanical equipment, will perform duties related to the operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of dams, aqueducts, facilities, vehicles, equipment, roads, bridges, land and related systems of the City of New York in accordance with Department Rules and Regulations. Specifically, this position will be focused on addressing hazardous and non-hazardous trees along DEP’s roads as well as problem trees along property borders, aqueducts, boat launches, dams, and operating facilities. May require the use of climbing hooks and belts or climbing ladders to gain access to work areas. Will cut away dead and excess branches from trees, clear branches and brush, use bucket of extended truck booms, and/or chainsaws, hooks, handsaws, shears, operate shredding and chipping equipment and feed limbs and brush into the machines. May clean, sharpen, lubricate tools and equipment, and inspect trees for existence of disease or pests. In addition, candidate may perform tasks related to general forestry work, carpentry and construction, service vehicles and equipment, operate and maintain water and wastewater conveyances and treatment equipment, install and maintain fixtures and gauges, requisition and store supplies and equipment, maintain logs of operations, maintenance and water quality, service pumps, engines, valves and motors and maintain logs of operations, maintenance and water quality, service pumps, engines, valves and motors and maintain facility plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment. Candidate will check security of structures, operate communications equipment, hand and power tools, vehicles and other motor powered equipment and will comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
1. One year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities; or
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
2. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as: a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
Preferred Skills
- Forest management and/or prior work in the forest industry.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair, and maintenance related to logging, forestry and lumbering operations.
- Game of Logging Certification.
- Significant experience in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as excavator, backhoe, bulldozer or similar.
- Knowledge of plants and trees, their functions, inter-dependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be required. If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
