"Scholarship Recipients and Traffic Advisory Announced"

Twenty-one years ago, the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce started the Delhi Covered Bridge Run in Delhi to bring a fun and active event to the area.  In 2010, the Bridge Run didn't happen, but that was the same year the Catskill Ladies Association to Support and Inspire was formed.  The group was eager to help the community and decided to take on the event and bring back the Delhi Covered Bridge run.  The first event that the CLASI Ladies organized in 2011 had 222 participants.  In four years, event participation has more than doubled.  In the 2014 event, 546 runners and walkers participated and the group is hopeful for an even bigger crowd in 2015.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6th, 2015.  This charitable event consists of a 10K Run, 5K Run and 5K health walk! The Delhi Covered Bridge Run, held in one of the coolest small towns in America, is the largest road race in the greater Delhi area and attracts runners of every level from many neighboring towns and counties.  The courses are mostly flat with a couple of rolling knolls. The 10K course participants will cross the West Branch of the Delaware River on Delhi's historic covered bridge.  5K participants cross the Sherwood's Bridge and Lois Ray Memorial plaque.  Lois Ray was instrumental in raising funds for the Sherwood's Bridge.   "Last years race was a big hit! CLASI received a lot of positive feedback and we hope to see many past race participants again, and look forward to seeing some new faces too!" says Amy Beveridge, race director.  "Last year we had almost 550 participants and we're expecting an even larger crowd this year as we celebrate twenty years."
Prizes for the top male and female finisher include $100.  The top 2 finishers in each gender also get a 6 week fitness class and month long membership to the Cardio Club in Delhi and top 3 finishers in nine different age categories get wooden medals made by Bovina Brown Bats.   Runners and walkers interested in The Delhi Covered Bridge Run can complete the online entry form by visiting the C.L.A.S.I website at www.clasiladies.com/delhi-covered-bridge-run.html.  All participants will receive a commemorative 20th anniversary tote, and long sleeve T-shirts and a drink ticket for the After Party at O'Neill's Shire Pub will go to the first 500 people registered.  Fees for signing up are $25 if you pre-register online before June 4.  Registering on the day of the event is $30 and you may not get a t-shirt, so make sure to pre-register. The run is held on Saturday, June 6.  Day of registration and pre-registration pick-up opens at 7:00 a.m. and the races begins at 9:00 a.m.  This year, we are happy to announce that proceeds from this event will fund two scholarships to Delaware County graduating seniors and the Delhi Fire Department, who has helped the Bridge Run for the last 20 years. "Sponsorship is very important to the event and helps to cover the cost of the expenses so participant fees can all get donated. We are actively recruiting sponsors to help support the run." says Lisa Henderson, member of the event's fundraising committee.  "You can get your logo on the backs of over 500 participants for just $500."

The students chosen to receive this award are Melissa Shaver from Delaware Academy in Delhi and Frankie Boest from South Kortright Central School.  Their essays were selected out of the eleven that were submitted.

In her essay, Melissa writes about her idea for the Delhi and Walton communities to work together to construct a biking/walking trail along the old train tracks. This would provide a safe place for families and community members to be active and enjoy the outdoors.

Frankie's essay was about starting community gardens.  Her vision is to provide food for those in need, encourage a healthier lifestyle for all involved, promote environmental sustainability and build a sense of community.

"These essays were chosen based on the student's creativity and how realistically the idea could be implemented" stated Sarah Kellogg, chair of the scholarship committee.

Due to construction on Kingston Street and the usual congestion around the square, drivers should be aware of delays, detours and pedestrians/runners.  All vehicles should follow directions of race officials to ensure safety of the pedestrians and runners. Between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. drivers are advised to avoid Main Street surrounding the village square.  Caution should also be taken on State Route 28 by O'Connor Hospital, Kingston Street Bridge and Sherwood's Bridge.

The Bridge Run courses are mostly flat with a couple of rolling knolls. The 10K course participants will cross the West Branch of the Delaware River on Delhi's historic covered bridge. 5K participants will enjoy exquisite scenery and beautiful views of SUNY Delhi's college golf course.  "We're really thrilled to be supporting the Delhi Fire Department this year and are ready for another great Bridge Run in Delhi." says Amy Beveridge, race director.
